A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Kamengo, Mpigi District, Uganda
For Kabanda Charles, leadership meant carrying the fears of an entire community on his shoulders.
At 61 years old, the Chairman of Kamengo Zone B oversees a community of nearly 500 homes in Mpigi District — families who depend on local leadership for safety, coordination, and protection during difficult times.
But before Solar M7 arrived, darkness had become stronger than the people trying to fight against it.
At night, thieves moved freely through the community, hidden by shadows that made identification almost impossible. Families lived in fear. Crimes happened without witnesses. And even when incidents occurred, justice often failed because nobody could clearly see what had happened.
For Kabanda, the frustration cut deeply.
As chairman, he wanted to protect his people.
But darkness kept tying his hands.
The criminals seemed empowered by the night while ordinary families remained vulnerable and afraid inside their homes.
Then Solar M7 arrived. And slowly, confidence began returning to the community.
Today, reliable solar light surrounds Kabanda’s home and strengthens the sense of security around him as a leader. The atmosphere after sunset feels safer. Residents feel more confident. And for Kabanda, the ability to lead and respond to community concerns no longer disappears when darkness falls.
For the first time in a long while, the night no longer belongs entirely to fear.
“Before Solar M7, darkness made security and leadership very difficult,” Kabanda shared during his interview. “Now people feel safer, and I feel more confident supporting and protecting the community.”
According to Doreen Nanfuka, insecurity often grows rapidly in communities where darkness limits visibility, communication, and response.
“When reliable light enters communities, fear reduces and confidence increases,” Doreen explained. “Families feel more protected, and local leaders can serve more effectively.”
Innocent Kawooya says stories like Kabanda’s show how energy access contributes directly to safer and more resilient communities.
“Reliable light helps restore security, accountability, and trust inside communities,” he noted. “It helps ensure that darkness no longer protects fear and criminality.”
Today, nights in Kamengo Zone B no longer feel completely controlled by shadows.
Families rest with greater peace of mind. Leadership feels stronger. And in a community where darkness once protected criminals and weakened justice, Solar M7 is now helping restore something deeply important.
