Today, as Uganda and many friends across Africa celebrate the birthday of Her Excellency Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, we join millions of admirers in honouring a woman whose life has become synonymous with compassion, service, dignity, faith, and a commitment to improving the lives of ordinary people.
For decades, Mama Janet has stood as one of Africa’s most respected champions of education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, youth development, child welfare, and family values. Through her leadership, advocacy, and personal example, she has inspired generations of women, mothers, young people, educators, healthcare workers, and community leaders to believe that meaningful change begins with service to others.
Her story is not merely one of public office. It is a story of commitment to people. Long before many knew her as Uganda’s First Lady or Minister of Education and Sports, she was already dedicating her efforts to supporting vulnerable children, empowering women, strengthening families, and helping communities recover from the devastating effects of conflict and disease.
One of the most enduring symbols of this commitment remains the Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO), an organisation she founded to support children and families affected by war, poverty, and HIV/AIDS. Through UWESO and numerous related initiatives, countless children have gained access to education, shelter, healthcare, and opportunities that would otherwise have remained out of reach.
Throughout her public life, Maama Janet has consistently emphasised a simple but powerful belief: that healthy families build strong communities, and strong communities build strong nations. This philosophy has shaped her work in education, healthcare, sports, youth empowerment, and social development.
As Minister of Education and Sports, she has continued to champion quality education, character formation, values-based leadership, and opportunities for every child, regardless of background. Her advocacy has consistently reminded parents, teachers, leaders, and communities that education is not merely about classrooms and examinations; it is about preparing young people to become responsible citizens capable of transforming society.
Her commitment to women and girls has been equally remarkable. Across Uganda and beyond, she has encouraged women to pursue education, embrace leadership, participate in economic activities, and become active contributors to national development. Through initiatives focused on maternal health, community empowerment, and social welfare, she has demonstrated that investing in women is one of the most effective ways to transform a nation.
These values of decency, compassion, dignity, and service are among the reasons why Decent Africa recognised Her Excellency as Africa’s Most Decent First Lady. The recognition reflects not only her graceful public conduct and respect for African values but also the substance behind that conduct, decades of practical work that have improved lives and strengthened communities.

It was therefore a profound honour for us when, on 24th June 2024, we joined Her Excellency during her birthday celebrations at the UWESO Children’s Village in Masulita. On that memorable occasion, attended by His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and many distinguished guests, Decent Africa had the privilege of presenting the Top Most Decent First Lady of Africa 2024 Award to Mama Janet.
The award was not simply a celebration of elegance or public appearance. It was a recognition of a lifetime dedicated to service. It acknowledged her contribution to child welfare, education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, family development, and the promotion of values that continue to inspire millions across Africa.
The Masulita celebration itself carried deep symbolism. Surrounded by children whose lives have been positively impacted by initiatives she has championed, Maama Janet received an honour that reflected the very principles she has promoted throughout her life: compassion, humility, service, dignity, and hope.
Today, as she celebrates another year of life, we recognise that her influence extends far beyond Uganda’s borders. Her work continues to inspire leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, development practitioners, and ordinary citizens across Africa who believe that lasting progress is built through service to others.
