A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Buteyongera, Mukono District, Uganda
At 75 years old, Nakamya Nabatanda Lovisa remains the center of her family’s world.
Inside her home in Buteyongera, Mukono District, children, daughters, and grandchildren still depend on her care, guidance, and strength every single day. Even with age resting gently on her shoulders, Lovisa continues nurturing the people around her with quiet determination.
But before Solar M7 arrived, darkness made life painfully difficult.
When night fell, moving around the home became risky and exhausting. Simple responsibilities turned into challenges. Caring for children, tending to the house, and supporting the family after sunset demanded more energy and caution than her aging body could comfortably carry.
Slowly, darkness began taking away something deeply important from her.
Independence. And with it, dignity.
Then Solar M7 entered her home.
And suddenly, light returned more than visibility.
It returned confidence.
Today, Lovisa moves through her home safely and comfortably at night. She tends to her responsibilities with greater ease. She cares for her grandchildren without fear of stumbling through darkness. The home feels calmer, warmer, and more alive.
Most importantly, she once again feels capable of leading her family with pride.
“When the light came, life became easier for me,” Lovisa shared during her interview. “Now I can move around safely, help the children, and continue taking care of my family even at night.”
According to Doreen Nanfuka, elderly women are among the people most deeply affected by lack of reliable energy access.
“Many older women quietly carry entire families on their shoulders,” Doreen explained. “When darkness limits their movement and safety, it affects the whole household emotionally and practically. Light restores confidence and dignity to their daily lives.”
Innocent Kawooya says stories like Lovisa’s show why energy access must also be viewed through the lens of human dignity and inclusion.
“For elderly people, reliable light is not luxury,” he noted. “It supports safety, independence, health, and emotional wellbeing. It helps them continue living with strength and respect inside their communities.”
Today, evenings inside Lovisa’s home no longer feel limiting.
Children still gather around her.
Grandchildren still depend on her wisdom.
And in a house where darkness once weakened her confidence, light now helps a grandmother continue leading her family with pride.
