A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Bukalango, Wakiso District, Uganda
Inside Nantale Fatuma’s home in Bukalango, Wakiso District, eight people share life together across generations.
Children. Grandchildren. Elders.
Mothers trying every day to keep the family safe and moving forward despite the hardships surrounding them.
But before Solar M7 arrived, nights carried danger into the household.
Like many families living without reliable electricity, they depended on candles for light. The flames were small, but the risks were enormous. One night, a candle fire burned part of the family’s mosquito net, nearly turning an ordinary evening into tragedy.
After that moment, fear followed every sunset.
The family slept cautiously.
Children studied under unsafe light.
And the elders worried constantly about what another candle accident could bring.
Then Solar M7 arrived.
And slowly, the fear began to disappear.
Tonight, the home glows safely beneath reliable solar light. The children now study comfortably after sunset instead of struggling through darkness. The elders rest more peacefully. Mothers continue working and caring for the family without the constant fear of fire hanging over the night.
The atmosphere inside the house feels calmer.
Safer. More hopeful.
“For a long time, candles made life dangerous for us,” Fatuma shared during her interview. “Now the children can study safely, the home feels peaceful, and we no longer live with fear every night.”
According to Doreen Nanfuka, many multigenerational families silently endure unsafe living conditions simply because reliable lighting remains out of reach.
“When families rely on candles, danger becomes part of daily life,” Doreen explained. “Reliable solar light protects children, supports caregiving, improves education, and allows families to feel secure inside their own homes again.”
Innocent Kawooya says one of the greatest impacts of #100DaysofSolar is helping families replace survival anxiety with dignity and opportunity.
“Safe light changes emotional realities inside households,” he noted. “It creates room for education, productivity, rest, and peace of mind. That is where real transformation begins.”
Today, evenings inside Fatuma’s home no longer feel filled with danger.
Children study beneath safe light.
The elderly sleep more peacefully.
And in a house where a candle flame once nearly destroyed everything, Solar M7 now shines as something far greater than brightness.
It shines as safety. It shines as opportunity. And it shines as hope shared across generations.
