Eight Parliament staff, including the Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Chris Obore, have been arrested in connection with alleged misuse of the Parliamentary Cooperative Savings and Credit Society (SACCO) funds.
The eight were arrested by detectives attached to the Inspectorate of Government. Inspectorate of Government spokesperson Ali Munira confirmed the arrests, saying the suspects would be arraigned before court any time.
The arrests come at a time when security is investigating former Parliament Speaker Anita Among over alleged corruption, abuse of office, and money laundering.
Security operatives have since searched Among’s office at Parliament, and her properties in Kampala, Wakiso District, and Bukedea District. These include her homes in Nakasero, Ntinda, Kigo, and Bukedea.
Sources privy to the probe confirmed that several Members of Parliament and Parliament staff, including officials linked to Among’s office, were lined up for questioning as investigators widen the scope of their inquiries.
The eight suspects are expected to be arraigned before court, where they will face charges related to the alleged misuse of SACCO funds. The Inspectorate of Government, which led the arrests, has not yet disclosed the specific charges or the amount of money allegedly misappropriated.
The investigation into Among, which has already seen searches of her properties, is expected to continue as authorities gather evidence and interview witnesses.
For now, the arrests mark a significant escalation in the ongoing probe into financial misconduct at Parliament and raise questions about the management of the Parliamentary SACCO and the oversight exercised by its leadership.
