For centuries, commerce moved at the speed of transportation.

Ships. Roads. Railways. Airplanes.

Today, economies increasingly move at the speed of payments. And in the digital era, speed is becoming power.

Across the world, countries are rapidly building real-time payment systems capable of transferring money instantly between individuals, businesses, merchants, banks, governments, and digital wallets, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

The transformation is changing how economies function.

Workers can receive salaries instantly. Merchants settle transactions in seconds. Governments distribute social transfers faster. SMEs improve cash flow. Consumers expect money to move immediately, not tomorrow.

But as domestic real-time payment systems expand globally, a new challenge has emerged:

How do these national systems connect to one another internationally?

That question is now becoming one of the most important financial infrastructure discussions of the modern era. And increasingly, Africa sits at the centre of the opportunity.

For decades, international payments remained surprisingly inefficient compared to domestic transactions. A person could send money instantly within a country, yet wait days for cross-border settlement. Transactions often passed through multiple correspondent banks, creating delays, higher fees, compliance friction, foreign exchange complications, and limited transparency.

This fragmentation became more problematic as digital commerce, migration, freelancing, e-commerce, FinTech expansion, and cross-border trade accelerated globally.

Money was becoming digital.

But payment infrastructure remained geographically siloed.

To solve this, countries began building domestic instant payment systems capable of moving funds in real time. These systems created major efficiency gains within national economies. Across different regions of the world, governments and central banks launched infrastructure enabling instant domestic transfers between banks and payment providers.

Africa joined this transformation through the growth of:

  • national payment switches,
  • interoperable mobile money systems,
  • instant settlement infrastructure,
  • digital wallets,
  • and real-time gross settlement modernization.

Yet the next frontier is no longer domestic instant payments alone.

The next frontier is interlinking them.

This is where initiatives such as the Bank for International Settlements’ (BIS) Project Nexus become strategically important.

Project Nexus is designed to explore how countries can connect their domestic instant payment systems internationally through standardised infrastructure and interoperability frameworks. Rather than replacing national systems, the model seeks to connect them, creating what many increasingly describe as a “network of networks.”

The concept is transformative.

Instead of building entirely new global payment rails from scratch, countries can modernise domestically and then interconnect their systems internationally. A payment initiated in one country could eventually move across borders with the same simplicity and speed users experience domestically.

For Africa, the implications could be profound.

Because payment fragmentation remains one of the continent’s largest barriers to economic integration.

A trader in Kampala may still struggle to pay suppliers efficiently in Kigali. An SME in Lusaka may face delays receiving regional payments. Freelancers working internationally often encounter expensive settlement systems. Migrant workers continue paying some of the world’s highest remittance costs. Cross-border SMEs lose valuable liquidity waiting for funds to clear.

In many cases, goods move across borders faster than money does.

That contradiction is becoming increasingly unsustainable in a digital economy.

Real-time payment connectors could fundamentally change this.

If African instant payment systems become increasingly interoperable, both domestically and internationally, the continent could experience major improvements in:

  • cross-border commerce,
  • SME liquidity,
  • financial inclusion,
  • remittance efficiency,
  • e-commerce growth,
  • regional trade,
  • and digital entrepreneurship.

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) makes this especially important. As African economies deepen regional trade integration, payment systems capable of supporting seamless cross-border transactions become essential infrastructure.

Trade cannot scale efficiently if payments remain fragmented.

This is why many regulators and policymakers increasingly view payment interoperability not simply as banking modernisation, but as an economic strategy.

The rise of real-time payment systems is also reshaping consumer expectations.

Young Africans growing up with mobile money and digital wallets increasingly expect financial transactions to happen instantly. Waiting days for settlement feels increasingly outdated in an era of smartphones, instant messaging, and digital commerce.

That shift in behaviour is quietly transforming the entire financial sector.

Banks are being forced to modernize.
FinTechs are scaling rapidly.
Governments are digitizing payments.
Merchants are integrating QR systems.
Telecom operators are evolving into financial infrastructure providers.

And behind all of this lies one increasingly important reality:

Payments are becoming programmable ecosystems rather than isolated transactions.

Modern real-time systems increasingly integrate:

  • APIs,
  • merchant systems,
  • identity layers,
  • fraud monitoring,
  • digital wallets,
  • mobile apps,
  • compliance tools,
  • and data-rich messaging standards such as ISO 20022.

The result is not simply faster money movement.

It is a more intelligent financial system.

This intelligence layer matters enormously for Africa’s future digital economy. Richer transaction data improves fraud detection, enables better credit scoring, supports SME formalisation, enhances compliance, and strengthens interoperability between financial institutions.

At the same time, instant payment systems also create new competitive dynamics.

Historically, large banks dominated transaction infrastructure. Today, FinTechs and telecom operators increasingly participate directly in payment ecosystems through APIs, digital wallets, merchant platforms, and embedded finance systems.

This competition is accelerating innovation.

But it also creates regulatory pressure.

As real-time payment systems interconnect across borders, regulators face increasingly complex questions around:

  • cybersecurity,
  • data governance,
  • consumer protection,
  • settlement risk,
  • interoperability rules,
  • digital identity,
  • financial crime monitoring,
  • and systemic resilience.

The faster money moves, the faster fraud can move too.

This is why trust becomes foundational.

A continent-wide interoperable payment ecosystem requires not only technical connectivity, but also:

  • strong governance,
  • harmonised regulation,
  • resilient infrastructure,
  • and coordinated policy frameworks.

Africa’s challenge, therefore, is not simply building faster systems.

It is building trusted systems.

There is another important risk:

Uneven modernisation.

Some African economies are advancing rapidly in payment modernisation, while others still struggle with legacy infrastructure, low digital penetration, weak interoperability, or limited regulatory capacity. If modernisation remains uneven, fragmentation could persist despite technological progress.

This is why collaboration matters.

Regional institutions, regulators, FinTechs, telecom operators, development agencies, and ecosystem builders must increasingly work together to ensure interoperability becomes continental rather than isolated.

A farmer accessing regional markets.
An SME surviving because liquidity arrives on time.

These are the real human outcomes hidden behind financial infrastructure modernization.

Most citizens may never hear terms like “Project Nexus” or “interoperable instant payment connectors.”

But they will experience what those systems make possible.

Faster commerce. Lower costs. Greater inclusion. Regional opportunity.

And perhaps for the first time, a financial system where African economies can increasingly transact with one another at the speed of ambition rather than the speed of bureaucracy.

The future of money may not belong to isolated payment systems.

It may belong to connected ones.

And Africa’s next economic leap could depend on how effectively its financial networks learn to speak, instantly, to the rest of the world.
