A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Kasenge Nakawuka, Uganda
As village chairman in Kasenge Nakawuka, Sselutonda Derrick carries a responsibility that follows him long after the sun goes down.
At 40 years old, people look to him for guidance, protection, and leadership during difficult moments inside the community. When problems arise, when insecurity spreads, or when families need help, Derrick is expected to respond.
But before Solar M7 arrived, darkness often made him feel powerless.
At night, thieves moved unseen through the village, using darkness as protection. Community members lived with fear, and even Derrick’s own family felt unsafe after sunset. Without reliable lighting, responding to incidents became difficult, and protecting both his household and the wider community felt increasingly frustrating.
For a leader trusted by so many people, the darkness felt personal.
Because leadership becomes difficult when fear controls the night.
Then Solar M7 arrived. And slowly, confidence began returning.
Today, Derrick’s home is brightly lit after sunset. He now moves more confidently at night, secures his household more effectively, and remains better connected to the community he serves. The presence of reliable light has strengthened both his family’s sense of safety and his ability to lead with assurance.
For Derrick, the transformation goes beyond visibility.
It feels like authority restored.
“Before Solar M7, darkness made security difficult for both my family and the community,” Derrick shared during his interview. “Now I feel more confident protecting my home and responding better when people need help.”
According to Doreen Nanfuka, local leaders often carry emotional pressure when communities remain vulnerable after dark.
“When village leaders gain reliable light and safer homes, it strengthens their ability to serve confidently,” Doreen explained. “Security, communication, and community trust all improve when darkness no longer controls the environment.”
Innocent Kawooya says stories like Derrick’s demonstrate how energy access also supports stronger local leadership and community resilience.
“Reliable light empowers leaders to protect and serve communities more effectively,” he noted. “Safe and connected households create safer and more confident communities overall.”
Today, nights inside Derrick’s home no longer feel controlled by fear.
The darkness no longer protects criminals.
His family rests more peacefully.
And in a community where darkness once weakened a leader’s ability to protect his people, Solar M7 is now helping restore something deeply important.
Confidence. Security. And leadership strengthened by light.
