A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Kamengo, Mpigi District, Uganda
For most of his life, Kibirige Federiyo has lived in a world shaped by silence.
Deaf since childhood, the 64-year-old bicycle repairer from Kamengo, Mpigi District, learned early how isolating life could become when communication itself is difficult. Yet despite the challenges, he worked hard to support himself and care for his grandchildren through the small income he earned repairing bicycles in the community.
But before Solar M7 arrived, darkness made his isolation even heavier.
By day, silence already separated him from much of the world around him.
By night, darkness deepened that separation.
Inside the home, his grandchildren struggled to study and move safely after sunset. His ability to continue working and supporting the family became limited once evening arrived. And for Federiyo, the combination of disability, darkness, and poverty often made him feel excluded from the opportunities and comfort many others take for granted.
The nights felt lonely. Limiting. And emotionally exhausting.
Then Solar M7 arrived. And slowly, life inside the household began to change.
Today, reliable solar light fills Federiyo’s home after sunset. His grandchildren now study more comfortably beneath steady light. The household feels safer and more connected. And for Federiyo himself, the home no longer feels trapped in isolation once darkness falls.
For the first time in a long while, the environment around him feels more inclusive.
More dignified. More human.
“Before Solar M7, life became very difficult at night because darkness affected both my family and my work,” Federiyo shared during his interview. “Now the home feels safe, and the children are able to learn properly.”
According to Doreen Nanfuka, people living with disabilities often experience the harshest effects of energy poverty and social isolation.
“When homes gain reliable light, people with disabilities regain comfort, confidence, and a stronger sense of belonging,” Doreen explained. “Energy access becomes deeply connected to dignity and inclusion.”
Innocent Kawooya says stories like Federiyo’s reveal why inclusive development must prioritize vulnerable communities and people living with disabilities.
“Reliable light helps restore opportunity, safety, and dignity to people who are too often overlooked,” he noted. “Inclusion becomes real when everyone can live more safely and confidently inside their homes.”
Today, nights inside Federiyo’s home no longer feel trapped in silence and darkness.
The grandchildren continue learning. The household feels alive. And in a life where disability and darkness once combined to deepen isolation, Solar M7 is now helping restore something profoundly important.
Inclusion. Dignity. And the feeling of belonging again.
