A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Mulajje, Mukono District, Uganda
For years, every night inside Katongole Steven’s home felt like walking through danger blindfolded.
At 69 years old, living in Mulajje, Mukono District, Steven had slowly learned to move carefully through darkness as though survival depended on memorizing every object around him.
Because sometimes, it did. One unseen chair. One misplaced object. One wrong step in the darkness. And suddenly the silence of the night would shatter with the sound of a painful fall.
Over time, the fear became deeply psychological. Steven stopped moving freely after sunset. He avoided crossing the room unless absolutely necessary.
Even hunger became something frightening, because eating meant standing up, navigating darkness, and risking another injury inside his own house.
The home no longer felt safe. It felt like a trap waiting for his body to fail him again. And for an elderly man who once moved with confidence and independence, the emotional humiliation slowly became as painful as the physical danger itself.
Darkness did not only limit his visibility. It stole his dignity.
Then Solar M7 arrived. And the transformation felt almost unbelievable.
The first evening his home filled with warm golden light, Steven stood quietly absorbing something he had not felt in years.
Freedom. Not freedom to travel far. Not freedom from hardship. But the simple human freedom to move safely through his own home without fear.
Now, when night comes, Steven no longer trembles before standing up. He eats when he feels hungry. He walks confidently across the room. He no longer memorizes shadows or fears invisible obstacles waiting for him in darkness.
The house feels open again. Safe again. Human again.
“Before Solar M7, nights were frightening because every movement felt dangerous,” Steven shared during his interview. “Now I move freely, eat peacefully, and sleep without fear.”
According to Doreen Nanfuka, elderly people living in poorly lit environments often endure constant physical and emotional stress that remains invisible to outsiders.
“When older people stop fearing movement inside their own homes, you immediately see confidence and dignity return,” Doreen explained. “Reliable light restores independence in very profound ways.”
Innocent Kawooya says stories like Steven’s reveal how energy access directly protects human dignity and physical wellbeing.
“Reliable light helps vulnerable people live safely and confidently inside their homes,” he noted. “It restores freedom many people never realize darkness has taken away.”
Today, nights inside Steven’s home no longer feel like silent traps. The shadows no longer threaten him. The fear has loosened its grip. And in a life where darkness once turned an elderly man’s own house into a place of danger, Solar M7 is now helping restore something deeply human.
Freedom. Confidence. And the dignity of moving through life without fear again.
