Uganda Mourns Gen. Moses Ali, Veteran Soldier and Statesman, at 87

Uganda is mourning the death of Gen. Moses Ali, one of the country’s longest-serving public figures whose career spanned military service, rebellion, peace negotiations, and decades in government. He was 87.

Gen. Ali died after being admitted to Nakasero Hospital earlier in the week, where he had been receiving treatment. His passing marks the end of a public career that shaped Uganda’s political and security landscape for more than five decades.

Born on April 5, 1939, in Adjumani District, Moses Ali trained as a lawyer before rising through the ranks of public service and the military. During the administration of former President Idi Amin, he held senior government positions before later becoming a key figure in the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF), a rebel movement that emerged during the country’s turbulent post-Amin years.

His journey from rebel commander to national leader became one of Uganda’s most notable political transformations. Following peace efforts and national reconciliation, Ali joined successive governments under President Yoweri Museveni, serving in several Cabinet portfolios and eventually as Deputy Prime Minister while representing Adjumani West in Parliament.

Throughout his years in government, Gen. Ali was associated with programmes aimed at expanding rural development, improving service delivery, and supporting socio-economic transformation, particularly in the West Nile sub-region. His leadership also contributed to strengthening engagement between government and local communities.

Known for his resilience, Ali remained active in public life well into his eighties despite recurring health challenges and periodic speculation about his condition. Earlier this year, he concluded an uninterrupted run in Cabinet that had lasted for decades, although he continued serving as Member of Parliament for Adjumani West.

Political leaders, colleagues, and citizens have described Gen. Ali as a pivotal figure whose life reflected Uganda’s complex political history from conflict and reconciliation to governance and national development. His career earned him recognition as both a military leader and a statesman who remained influential across changing political eras.

As the nation prepares to honour him, Gen. Moses Ali leaves behind a legacy defined by public service, political endurance, and a role in shaping modern Uganda through periods of conflict, peacebuilding, and national reconstruction.
