The Health Worker Who Can Now Serve His Community After Dark

A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Bukalango, Wakiso District, Uganda

By day, Musiige Richard moves through Bukalango, Wakiso District, carrying medicine, guidance, and hope from home to home.

At just 25 years old, he serves as a Village Health Team worker, supporting families, counseling mothers, checking on vulnerable residents, and helping communities respond to health challenges long before they become emergencies.

For many people, Richard is one of the first people they call when help is needed.

But before Solar M7 arrived, darkness limited how far his support could reach.

When night came, movement became difficult. Responding to emergencies felt risky. Counseling mothers after sunset became harder. And like many frontline health workers in underserved communities, Richard often felt powerless once darkness swallowed the village.

The work never stopped.

But the light did.

Then Solar M7 entered his home.

And suddenly, the night no longer ended his ability to serve.

Today, Richard continues supporting families long after sunset. Mothers can still reach him when urgent help is needed. Medicine can be organized safely at night. Communication remains active through a charged phone. And inside his own home, his family now sleeps beneath reliable light instead of uncertainty.

For Richard, the transformation feels both personal and professional.

“Before Solar M7, darkness made community health work much more difficult,” Richard shared during his interview. “Now I can continue helping people safely at night, while also protecting and supporting my own family.”

According to Doreen Nanfuka, reliable energy access significantly strengthens the effectiveness of frontline healthcare workers in rural communities.

“When health workers gain light and reliable phone charging, entire communities benefit,” Doreen explained. “It improves communication, emergency response, maternal support, and overall confidence in community healthcare systems.”

Innocent Kawooya says stories like Richard’s demonstrate how deeply connected energy access and healthcare access truly are.

“Reliable light empowers health workers to continue serving communities even after sunset,” he noted. “It strengthens local healthcare systems while also improving safety and wellbeing inside their own households.”

Today, nights in Bukalango feel different for many families Richard supports.

A trusted health worker remains reachable.

Mothers receive guidance after dark.

And in a community where darkness once interrupted care, Solar M7 is helping transform light into something far greater than electricity.

A lifeline. A shield. And health made possible.
