A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Kasenge Nakawuka, Uganda
For many years, Nakasolya Mercy was the strong pillar holding her family together.
But at 71 years old, sickness has slowly weakened the grandmother of eight, making everyday life far more difficult than it once was. In her home in Kasenge Nakawuka, even simple tasks now require more effort, more caution, and more resilience than before.
And before Solar M7 arrived, darkness made everything even harder.
When night came, the house felt exposed and vulnerable. Mercy worried constantly about thieves moving around unseen outside the home. The children became frightened after sunset, and the atmosphere inside the household shifted from comfort to anxiety.
For Mercy, the darkness carried emotional weight beyond fear alone.
It made her feel powerless.
It made her feel as though the strength and dignity she once carried so proudly were slowly fading away.
Then Solar M7 arrived. And slowly, peace began returning to the household.
Today, reliable solar light surrounds the home after sunset. The family now sleeps with greater comfort and security. The children no longer live in constant fear of the darkness. And for Mercy, the presence of light has restored a sense of calmness and dignity she thought was disappearing from her life.
For the first time in a long while, the home feels protected again.
“Before Solar M7, nights were difficult because we feared thieves and darkness,” Mercy shared during her interview. “Now the family feels safe, the children sleep peacefully, and I feel more at peace in my home.”
According to Doreen Nanfuka, elderly caregivers living with illness often experience deep emotional stress when homes remain unsafe and poorly lit.
“When older people feel unable to protect their families because of darkness, it affects their confidence and wellbeing,” Doreen explained. “Reliable light restores security, emotional comfort, and dignity inside the household.”
Innocent Kawooya says stories like Mercy’s reveal how energy access strengthens both safety and emotional resilience for vulnerable families.
“Reliable light helps households feel secure, connected, and protected,” he noted. “It restores dignity to people who have spent years carrying families through difficult circumstances.”
Today, nights inside Mercy’s home no longer feel ruled by fear.
The children rest peacefully. The family feels safer. And in a house where darkness once threatened to weaken an elderly grandmother’s strength and dignity, Solar M7 is now helping restore something deeply human.
Security. Peace. And the comfort of feeling protected at home again.
