The Young Health Worker Helping Lead His Community Out of Darkness

A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Bukalango, Wakiso District, Uganda

At just 20 years old, Ssekalega Livingstone already carries responsibilities many people twice his age would struggle to manage.

In Bukalango, Wakiso District, he moves through the community as an assistant health worker, checking on families, identifying those who are sick, helping vulnerable residents access support, and ensuring people in need are not forgotten.

He knows which households are struggling. He knows who needs medicine. He knows where help is urgently required.

For many people in the village, Livingstone has become a trusted source of connection, guidance, and support despite his young age.

But before Solar M7 arrived, darkness limited how much he could do.

When night came, communication became difficult. Work slowed down. Staying connected through his phone required extra cost and effort. And like many young people trying to serve their communities, he often felt constrained by the lack of reliable energy.

Yet the needs of the village did not disappear after sunset.

Then Solar M7 entered his home. And suddenly, his ability to serve began to expand.

Today, Livingstone works longer and more effectively after dark. His phone remains charged from home, helping him stay connected through calls and mobile money services that support communication and emergency coordination inside the community.

For him, the transformation feels empowering.

“Before Solar M7, many things became difficult once darkness came,” Livingstone shared during his interview. “Now I stay connected, continue helping people longer, and feel more capable of serving my community.”

According to Doreen Nanfuka, young community leaders often become even more effective when reliable energy supports communication and mobility.

“When young people like Livingstone gain reliable light and phone access, their ability to organize, respond, and support others improves significantly,” Doreen explained. “You begin seeing stronger local leadership emerging directly from the community itself.”

Innocent Kawooya says one of the most inspiring aspects of #100DaysofSolar is watching young people become active agents of transformation inside their communities.

“Leadership is not defined only by age or position,” he noted. “When young people are empowered with the right tools and opportunities, they become powerful drivers of community progress.”

Today, nights in Bukalango no longer slow Livingstone down the way they once did.

The phone stays connected.

The work continues.

And in a village where darkness once limited a young man’s ability to serve, Solar M7 is helping prove something powerful.

That leadership can begin early.

That service can come from anyone.

And that even the young can help guide their communities toward a brighter future.
