Spider-Man: Brand New Day Swings to Second-Biggest Global Opening Weekend Ever

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has launched with a spectacular $927 million global box office debut, securing the second-largest opening weekend in cinematic history and providing a major boost for Marvel Studios.

The film, starring real-life couple Tom Holland and Zendaya, now trails only Avengers: Endgame, which set the all-time record with over $1.2 billion in its opening weekend in 2019.

The latest Spider-Man instalment shattered expectations, soaring past its estimated $225 million production budget. In North America, the film earned $335 million, marking the second-best domestic opening ever. Internationally, it performed exceptionally well, grossing $572 million from more than 73,000 screens outside the US, including $49 million in the UK and $121 million in China alone.

This strong performance comes as a much-needed victory for Marvel, which has faced a string of underperforming films in recent years. The blockbuster opening provides significant momentum ahead of the highly anticipated December release of Avengers: Doomsday, the long-awaited culmination of multiple superhero story arcs following Endgame.

Brand New Day, which picks up years after 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, follows Peter Parker as he continues to fight crime in a world that has forgotten his secret identity. The film has received largely positive reviews from critics, with many hailing it as Holland’s best performance as the web-slinger yet.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige expressed his gratitude to audiences, calling the opening “truly phenomenal.” “We are so grateful to audiences everywhere for coming out and experiencing our film the way it was meant to be seen,” Feige said.

The film’s success is a bright spot in a year that has seen cinema attendance rebound significantly from the pandemic-induced slowdown. The North American box office is on track to surpass $10 billion for the first time since 2019, boosted by other blockbuster hits like Toy Story 5, Michael, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, all of which have crossed the $1 billion mark. Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, released in July, are also on track to join the billion-dollar club.

While Marvel films since Endgame, including The Marvels and Thunderbolts, have struggled to match the studio’s peak box office dominance, Spider-Man remains one of its most lucrative franchises. The previous instalment, No Way Home, grossed nearly $2 billion globally. With Brand New Day, the franchise has proven its enduring appeal to audiences worldwide.
