MTN Uganda Reports Strong ESG Progress as Digital Inclusion and MoMo Growth Accelerate

MTN Uganda has published its 2025 Sustainability Report, outlining how the telecommunications operator is embedding environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles into its business strategy while advancing digital inclusion, climate action and national development.

Published under the theme “Digitally Unstoppable,” the report highlights the company’s progress in expanding connectivity, strengthening financial inclusion, reducing its environmental footprint and aligning its sustainability reporting with global disclosure standards.

The company reported significant growth in its network and digital services during 2025, serving 24.2 million subscribers. It achieved 96.2% 3G population coverage, 88.6% 4G coverage, and 19% 5G coverage, while expanding its fibre network to 27,037 kilometres.

MTN Uganda also said it operates 241,000 active MoMo agents, 114,800 active merchants, and 1,664 customer service points, reinforcing its role in Uganda’s digital economy.

The report details the company’s environmental and governance achievements. MTN Uganda said 45% of its network sites are now powered by solar and hydropower, while a 490 kWh solar project was commissioned at its headquarters. The operator highlighted a reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions from its 2021 baseline and reported continued investment in sustainability initiatives, including UGX 549.4 billion in network investment, UGX 5.1 billion in corporate social investment, and UGX 1.6 trillion in tax contributions during the year.

In a message contained in the report, Chairman of the Board Charles Mbiire said sustainability has become central to the company’s long-term growth strategy.

“Our sustainability agenda is anchored on Planet, People, Doing Right and Growth, reflecting our belief that business success and national development are inseparable. In Africa, connectivity is more than a commercial service; it is critical infrastructure for education, enterprise, financial inclusion, public service delivery and participation in the digital economy,” Mbiire said.

Chief Executive Officer Sylvia Mulinge said the company continued to demonstrate that commercial success and social impact go hand in hand.

“In 2025, we delivered another year of purposeful progress, demonstrating that commercial performance and societal impact are mutually reinforcing. As more Ugandans gain access to reliable connectivity, digital tools and financial services, new pathways are created for productivity, enterprise, innovation and inclusion,” Mulinge said.

Mulinge further noted that the MTN Foundation invested more than UGX 5.1 billion in programmes that benefited over 60,000 people through education, youth empowerment, digital inclusion and community development.

The report also highlighted the performance of MTN MoMo, which served 14.7 million active subscribers and processed more than five billion transactions worth UGX 195.5 trillion during the year. According to the company, digital lending disbursed UGX 2.7 trillion to more than 3.4 million borrowers, while products such as Yinvesta, the MoMo Virtual Card and an enhanced MoMo App expanded access to savings, investments and digital financial services.

Phrase Lubega, Managing Director of MTN MoMo Uganda, said the service is transforming how people transact and enabling millions to build financial security. “We will continue to innovate, expand access and deepen usage, ensuring that no one is left behind as Uganda transitions into a more digitally enabled economy,” Lubega said.

Beyond operational performance, MTN Uganda said a KPMG-led True Value Assessment found the company generated UGX 34.9 trillion in broader economic, social and environmental value between 2022 and 2024. The assessment concluded that for every UGX 1 of financial profit generated, MTN Uganda created 22.4 times more value for society, underscoring the wider impact of its investments in connectivity, employment, financial inclusion and community development.
