A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Kamengo, Mpigi District, Uganda
For years, Moses Nizeyimana feared the coming of night more than the exhaustion of the day.
At 70 years old, living alone in Kamengo, Mpigi District, the elderly man had grown used to silence. But it was not peaceful silence. It was the kind that magnifies every movement, every sound, every fear hiding in darkness.
When evening arrived, Moses’ small house became a place of uncertainty.
Snakes slithered through unseen corners of the room. Insects crawled across his skin while he tried desperately to sleep. And every strange sound outside the house sent fear racing through his chest.
The darkness around him felt endless. Heavy. Alive.
His weak torch offered almost no protection. The fading beam barely reached beyond a few steps before the batteries weakened again, leaving him exposed inside what felt like a graveyard of shadows.
For Moses, the fear became psychological as much as physical.
He stopped feeling safe inside his own home.
Sometimes he remained awake for long hours, listening carefully, wondering what might already be moving inside the darkness around him.
The nights no longer felt like rest. They felt like survival. Then Solar M7 arrived. And for the first time in many years, the darkness stopped feeling stronger than his life.
The first night beneath reliable solar light changed the atmosphere of the entire house. The corners of the room became visible again. The fear of hidden movement began fading. The insects no longer felt invisible. The home no longer disappeared into terrifying silence after sunset.
Something deeper returned too.
Peace.
“Before Solar M7, nights were frightening because I could not see what surrounded me,” Moses shared during his interview. “Now I sleep peacefully because the house feels safe again.”
According to Doreen Nanfuka, many elderly people living alone silently endure dangerous and emotionally traumatic nighttime conditions caused by lack of reliable lighting.
“When you enter homes like Moses’, you realize darkness affects mental wellbeing as much as physical safety,” Doreen explained. “Reliable light restores emotional peace, dignity, and the feeling of security.”
Innocent Kawooya says stories like Moses’ reveal how energy access protects vulnerable people whose suffering often remains invisible to the world.
“Reliable light becomes protection for people who have spent years living with fear inside their own homes,” he noted. “It restores not only visibility, but also emotional safety and human dignity.”
Today, nights inside Moses’ home no longer feel haunted. The darkness no longer controls his thoughts. The snakes and shadows no longer own the room. And in a life where fear once swallowed every evening whole, Solar M7 is now helping restore something profoundly human.
Safety. Rest. And the ability to sleep without terror beside him anymore.
