A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Buteyongera, Mukono District, Uganda
Every day, Kakooza Mathias looks into the faces of 136 children and sees the future of his community.
As Head Teacher in Buteyongera, Mukono District, he carries the responsibility of guiding 56 girls and 80 boys toward lives filled with greater opportunity, confidence, and hope.
But for a long time, darkness kept standing in the way of those dreams.
When the sun disappeared, learning slowed down. Boarding pupils struggled to continue revising comfortably at night. Study hours ended too early. Ambition existed inside the children, but reliable light did not.
And in communities where education already faces many challenges, every lost hour matters.
Then Solar M7 arrived. And suddenly, evenings inside the school began to change.
Today, after sunset, boarding pupils remain gathered around books under clean, reliable light. Revision continues deep into the evening. Conversations about the future now fill the night air, dreams of becoming doctors, pilots, architects, and leaders who will one day transform their communities.
What once felt distant now feels possible.
For Mathias, that transformation carries enormous meaning.
“Before Solar M7, many children could not maximise their study time at night,” he shared during his interview. “Now they revise confidently after sunset, and you can see the difference in their motivation and belief in themselves.”
According to Doreen Nanfuka, schools and learning environments are among the places where reliable energy creates some of the most visible long-term impact.
“When children gain more time and safer conditions to study, the effect goes far beyond academics,” Doreen explained. “You begin seeing confidence grow. Aspirations become stronger. Students start believing their dreams are achievable.”
Innocent Kawooya says empowering young people through energy access is one of the most important investments Africa can make in its future.
“Solar energy is helping unlock educational opportunity for thousands of children who deserve the chance to dream bigger,” he noted. “Reliable light becomes a bridge between aspiration and achievement.”
Today, nights inside Mathias’ school no longer bring an end to learning.
Books stay open.
Conversations about the future continue.
And in a place where darkness once interrupted ambition, light is now helping a new generation dream beyond the limits of yesterday.
