The Sisters Learning to Carry Both Dreams and Responsibility

A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Bukalango, Wakiso District, Uganda

Inside a quiet home in Bukalango, Wakiso District, two teenage sisters are growing up far earlier than most children their age should.

Elizabeth and Tracy live with their 80-year-old grandmother, Gladys, while their parents work far away trying to provide for the family. In their parents’ absence, the girls have learned to balance two very different worlds at once.

They are students. And caregivers.

Every day, they help care for their elderly grandmother while still trying to protect their own future through education. They cook, clean, support the home, and somehow still find the strength to study and dream beyond the limits surrounding them.

But before Solar M7 arrived, darkness made that balance painfully difficult.

At night, candles filled the home with fear instead of comfort. The weak flames barely lit their books. Caring for their grandmother after sunset became stressful. Every evening felt like a struggle between responsibility and exhaustion.

And for two girls already carrying so much, the darkness only made the burden heavier.

Then Solar M7 arrived. And slowly, the atmosphere inside the home began to change.

Today, the girls study beneath reliable solar light while still caring for their grandmother comfortably and safely at night. Their books remain open longer. Their home feels calmer. And beside them, Gladys now rests beneath steady light instead of dangerous candle flames.

For Elizabeth and Tracy, the transformation feels emotional because it supports both the people they love and the future they are still fighting for.

“Before Solar M7, nights were difficult for us,” the sisters shared during their interview. “Now we can study properly and still take care of our grandmother without fear.”

According to Doreen Nanfuka, many young girls across underserved communities quietly carry caregiving responsibilities while also trying to continue their education.

“When girls are balancing school and family care, reliable light becomes extremely important,” Doreen explained. “It helps them protect both their responsibilities and their dreams at the same time.”

Innocent Kawooya says stories like Elizabeth and Tracy’s show how energy access strengthens family resilience across generations.

“Reliable light supports learning, caregiving, communication, and emotional wellbeing inside households,” he noted. “It helps families continue caring for one another while still building hope for the future.”

Today, evenings inside the girls’ home no longer feel filled with fear.

Their grandmother rests peacefully. Books remain open after sunset.

And in a house where candles once forced two sisters to choose between caregiving and ambition, Solar M7 is helping them protect both.

Their duty. And their dreams.
