The Community Influencer Who Refused to Let Darkness End His Purpose

A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Kamengo, Mpigi District, Uganda

For Augustine Kawuma, leadership was never simply about being known in the community.

It was about presence.

Guidance. Service. And the ability to inspire others even during difficult moments.

At 52 years old, the respected community influencer from Kamengo, Mpigi District spent much of his life helping people, mentoring others, and creating spaces where conversations, reflection, and community support could continue beyond the struggles of daily life.

But before Solar M7 arrived, darkness slowly began taking those things away from him.

When night fell, Augustine’s influence seemed to disappear with the light.

The evenings that once carried purpose became filled with fear instead.

Snakes moved dangerously through the darkness around his home, turning ordinary nights into moments of terror. Every movement outside the house carried uncertainty. Even spending quiet time in meditation or reflection became difficult because fear had replaced peace.

And slowly, the darkness began burying more than visibility. It buried his routines. His confidence. His ability to continue serving people after sunset.

For a man whose identity was deeply connected to helping others, the emotional weight became enormous.

Because purpose itself felt trapped by darkness. Then Solar M7 arrived. And something inside Augustine awakened again.

The first nights beneath reliable solar light transformed more than his home. They transformed the atmosphere surrounding his life. The fear of unseen danger reduced. The evenings became usable again. Meditation returned. Reflection returned. Conversations and community engagement no longer felt impossible after sunset.

And with that, his sense of purpose returned too.

“Before Solar M7, darkness made life fearful and limited what I could continue doing at night,” Augustine shared during his interview. “Now I feel alive again. I feel able to think, serve, and guide others with peace.”

According to Doreen Nanfuka, many community leaders and influential voices in underserved areas lose opportunities to continue meaningful work because darkness shuts down activity and emotional wellbeing after sunset.

“When reliable light enters these homes, you see people reclaiming their confidence, routines, and purpose,” Doreen explained. “The transformation becomes emotional, social, and spiritual.”

Innocent Kawooya says stories like Augustine’s reveal how energy access restores human potential far beyond basic household lighting.

“Reliable light helps people continue building ideas, serving communities, mentoring others, and living with purpose,” he noted. “It restores the power to continue contributing to society.”

Today, nights inside Augustine’s home no longer feel controlled by fear.

The darkness no longer silences his mind. Purpose fills the evenings again. And in a life where snakes, fear, and shadows once buried leadership beneath silence, Solar M7 is now helping restore something deeply powerful.

Purpose. Influence. And the freedom to keep serving others long after sunset.
