The Grandmother Carrying Thirteen Lives Through the Darkness

A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Bukalango, Wakiso District, Uganda

At 70 years old, Nabakoza Colonelia carries a responsibility that would overwhelm many people half her age.

Inside her home in Bukalango, Wakiso District, thirteen family members depend on her strength, her care, and her ability to keep the household moving forward every single day.

Among them are two children living with disabilities. Every morning begins with responsibility.

Every evening ends with exhaustion.

Yet despite the weight she carries, Colonelia continues showing up for her family with quiet resilience and love.

But before Solar M7 arrived, darkness made her burden even heavier.

When night came, caring for such a large household became painfully difficult. Moving safely around the home was challenging. Supporting children with special needs after sunset required enormous effort. The darkness made the nights feel long, suffocating, and emotionally draining.

For Colonelia, rest rarely existed. The responsibility never stopped. Then Solar M7 arrived.

And slowly, something inside the home began to change.

Tonight, reliable light fills the house with warmth and calmness. Caring for the children feels safer and more manageable. The family moves more confidently after sunset. The atmosphere inside the home feels lighter, emotionally as much as physically.

And for the first time in a long while, Colonelia feels some relief from the pressure she has carried for years.

“Life was very difficult for us in darkness,” she shared during her interview. “Now the home feels safer, the children are more comfortable, and I feel stronger caring for the family at night.”

According to Doreen Nanfuka, elderly caregivers supporting large families often experience hidden emotional and physical strain that becomes far worse under conditions of energy poverty.

“When you visit homes like Colonelia’s, you realise how deeply reliable light affects caregiving and dignity,” Doreen explained. “It helps older people continue supporting vulnerable family members more safely and comfortably.”

Innocent Kawooya says supporting households caring for vulnerable family members remains one of the most meaningful aspects of #100DaysofSolar.

“Reliable light brings relief to families carrying enormous responsibilities,” he noted. “It supports safety, emotional wellbeing, caregiving, and the dignity every household deserves.”

Today, nights inside Colonelia’s home no longer feel suffocating.

Children are cared for more safely. The family gathers beneath steady light.

And in a home where darkness once deepened the burden of survival, Solar M7 now shines as something far greater than electricity.

Relief. Dignity. And the strength to keep carrying a family forward with pride.
