A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Kamengo, Mpigi District, Uganda
Every evening, Kosasiya Nakalembe braced herself for another night of confusion, fear, and exhaustion inside her home.
At 77 years old, the grandmother of six from Kamengo, Mpigi District, carried the enormous responsibility of protecting and raising grandchildren who depended entirely on her care. But before Solar M7 arrived, darkness transformed the household into a place of nightly struggle.
As soon as the sun disappeared, the children began fighting battles they could not even properly see.
Insects crawled through the darkness. Ants bit their skin. Termites invaded the house.
The grandchildren swatted helplessly at shadows while crying in frustration and discomfort. Sometimes they scratched through the night instead of sleeping. Other times, fear and irritation ended any attempt at studying before books were quickly abandoned in the dark.
For Nakalembe, the home no longer felt peaceful after sunset. It felt chaotic. Restless.
Overwhelmed by discomfort and helplessness. And watching the children suffer night after night slowly broke her heart. Because darkness was not only stealing sleep. It was stealing safety, learning, health, and childhood peace from the people she loved most.
Then Solar M7 arrived. And slowly, the atmosphere inside the home began transforming.
The first evenings beneath reliable solar light felt calmer in ways the family had almost forgotten were possible. The children could finally see clearly around them. The insects no longer seemed to control the night. Books reopened. Study time returned. Conversations became calmer. And for the first time in years, the house began feeling like a home again instead of a place of nightly survival.
For Nakalembe, the emotional relief was enormous.
“Before Solar M7, nights were very difficult because the children suffered constantly in darkness,” she shared during her interview. “Now they study peacefully, sleep better, and the home feels calm again.”
According to Doreen Nanfuka, many elderly caregivers silently carry emotional distress watching children struggle inside unsafe and poorly lit homes.
“When reliable light enters these households, the emotional transformation is immediate,” Doreen explained. “Children become calmer, healthier, and more confident, while caregivers finally regain peace of mind.”
Innocent Kawooya says stories like Nakalembe’s reveal how energy access directly supports education, health, emotional wellbeing, and family stability.
“Reliable light helps transform homes from places of fear and discomfort into environments where children can grow, learn, and feel protected,” he noted. “It safeguards both present wellbeing and future opportunity.”
Today, nights inside Nakalembe’s home no longer feel chaotic.
The children sleep peacefully. Books stay open. The fear and confusion have faded. And in a household where darkness once stole health, comfort, and childhood joy, Solar M7 is now helping restore something deeply precious.
Calmness. Safety. And a future children can finally grow into with hope again.
