The Night Light Returned Peace to Yudaya’s Home

A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Sentema, Wakiso District, Uganda

For years, nights carried fear into the home of 56-year-old Yudaya Nankabirwa in Sentema, Wakiso District.

When darkness fell, her family’s world became smaller, quieter, and vulnerable. Her granddaughter often walked long distances just to charge a phone, returning home through lonely paths wrapped in darkness and uncertainty.

Thieves came often. Goats disappeared. Hens vanished. Sleep itself became difficult to trust.

Inside the house, babies cried through the night as insects crept in from the soil, biting them while the family struggled to rest. Sometimes, the darkness felt heavier than poverty itself.

But then Solar M7 arrived.

The first night the lights came on, everything inside Yudaya’s home changed. The walls glowed with warmth instead of fear. Her granddaughter sat down and began reading comfortably at night, something that had once felt impossible.

The family could now move around safely after sunset. The nights became calmer. Even the hens seemed more settled.

For Yudaya, this was never just about electricity. It was about dignity. It was about finally feeling safe enough to sleep. It was about children no longer growing up afraid of the dark.

“Before Solar M7, nights were full of fear and uncertainty,” Yudaya shared during her interview. “Now we sleep in peace. My granddaughter studies freely, and our home feels alive again.”

According to Doreen Nanfuka, stories like Yudaya’s reveal how energy poverty affects millions of families across Africa beyond what statistics can measure.

“Many people think darkness is only the absence of electricity,” Doreen explained. “But in communities like Sentema, darkness can mean fear, insecurity, interrupted education, poor health, and lost opportunity. When light enters these homes, dignity returns with it.”

Innocent Kawooya says the mission of #100DaysofSolar is about restoring opportunity to underserved communities.

“Solar M7 is not simply powering homes,” he noted. “It is helping restore safety, education, confidence, productivity, and hope for families that have spent years excluded from reliable energy access.”

Across many communities, families like Yudaya’s are discovering that one small source of light can transform an entire household. Children study longer. Mothers cook more safely. Families sleep with greater peace of mind. Phones stay charged, enabling communication, mobile money access, and connection to opportunity.

In Yudaya’s home, darkness no longer controls the night. Now, light lives there. And with it, hope.
