Twin Brothers Ordained Together in Historic Ceremony at Kasana-Luweero Diocese

In a rare and historic event, twin brothers Paul Wasswa Lubega and Peter Kato Matovu were ordained together at the Kasana-Luweero Catholic Diocese on Saturday, August 22, marking the first time identical twins have been ordained in the diocese.

The 29-year-old twins, born to Adam Bukenya and Consolata Nagadya (both now deceased) on November 17, 1996, took significant steps in their spiritual journeys. Wasswa was ordained a priest, while his twin brother, Kato, was ordained a deacon.

Diocesan Vocation Director Fr Godfrey Sserulangira confirmed that this was the first such occurrence in the diocese’s history. “They are the first twins to be ordained together in Kasana-Luweero,” he said.

The twins’ vocation journey began during their primary school years when a vocations team visited their school, St Jude Kakooge. Inspired by the call to serve God, both brothers expressed interest in the priesthood, a decision that would shape their lives.

Lubega’s journey took him through St Kizito Minor Seminary Nandere for secondary education and initial formation, followed by St Thomas Aquinas National Major Seminary Katigondo for philosophical studies, and finally St Mary’s National Seminary Ggaba for theological studies.

Matovu followed a similar path, attending the same primary and secondary schools. He then pursued his philosophical and spiritual formation at Uganda Martyrs’ National Major Seminary Alokulum before continuing his theological studies at St Mary’s National Seminary Ggaba.

Lubega expressed his desire to “proclaim the Gospel faithfully and joyfully, and serve the People of God with love, humility and dedication.” He sees his ordination as a faithful response to God’s call.

Lubega was among seven deacons ordained as priests during the ceremony. The others included Cyprian Kaliisa, Julius Lutamaguzi, David Kato Nkugwa, Hilary Tebuseeke, Expericto Kisitu, and Mathew Mulamira.

Matovu was among five seminarians ordained as deacons, alongside Ponsiano Ssegawa, Thomas Kibajjiro, Robert Mujjuzi, and John Mary Osinde.

The ordination ceremony marked a significant milestone for the diocese and for the brothers, who have now dedicated their lives to serving God and their community. The event was a powerful testament to their faith and shared journey, a story that will undoubtedly inspire many within the diocese and beyond.
