Microsoft Appoints Angela Nganga as East Africa Country Lead to Drive AI and Digital Transformation

Microsoft has appointed Angela Nganga as its Country Lead for East Africa, placing an experienced regional executive at the helm as the technology giant expands its focus on artificial intelligence, digital transformation and local innovation across the region.

Nganga, a long-serving member of Microsoft’s Middle East and Africa Emerging Markets leadership team, will lead the company’s engagement with governments, enterprise customers, and the startup ecosystem across Kenya and the wider East Africa region.

Based in Nairobi, Nganga joined Microsoft in 2012 and has held several senior positions across the company’s Middle East and Africa business. She most recently served as Regional Director of Customer Success for East and West Africa, where she led digital transformation and strategic engagements across the two regions.

Her previous roles include Director of Corporate Affairs for the Middle East and Africa and Education Industry Director for Africa, giving her exposure to both public sector and enterprise-facing parts of the business.

Nganga brings more than 20 years of experience spanning technology, telecommunications, healthcare, public affairs and policy to the role. Before joining Microsoft, she held senior corporate affairs and public policy positions at Telkom Kenya and AAR Health Services Ltd.

In her new role, Nganga will lead Microsoft’s work with governments, enterprises, and the startup ecosystem to build AI skills and workforce readiness, and to support the development of locally relevant technology solutions.

“I am delighted to lead Microsoft’s work in East Africa as the region strengthens its position as an innovation and AI hub,” said Nganga. “I look forward to partnering with governments, enterprise and the local startup ecosystem to build AI skills and workforce readiness, and to help partners develop and scale locally relevant solutions to real-world challenges. Enabling East African companies to become producers as well as consumers of AI innovation is essential to its success in the global digital economy”.

The appointment fills a leadership position that has been vacant since January 2026, when Phyllis Migwi stepped down as Microsoft’s Kenya Country Manager after three and a half years. During her tenure, Migwi oversaw the hosting of Africa’s largest Global AI Tour conference in Nairobi and the announcement of a $1 billion digital investment package with G42.

Nganga’s appointment comes at a pivotal infrastructure moment for Microsoft in the region, with the company preparing to bring East Africa’s first Azure cloud region and a geothermal-powered data centre online. The company has been recruiting for the role as it prepares to launch the cloud region and manage active cloud infrastructure.

The region’s vibrant tech ecosystem, youthful population, and existing strengths in mobile technology, fintech, and digital services position it well to lead in AI-driven solutions across Africa. Microsoft has framed the appointment as part of its ongoing commitment to East Africa’s digital economy.
