A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Buteyongera, Mukono District, Uganda
Miles away from their families, inside a small boys’ hostel in Buteyongera, Mukono District, young students gather every evening carrying dreams far bigger than the rooms they sleep in.
Among them are future engineers. Future doctors. Future architects.
Boys determined to build lives that stretch far beyond the limitations surrounding them today.
Every morning, they walk long distances to school. They endure exhaustion, sacrifice, and uncertainty because they believe education can change their future.
But before Solar M7 arrived, darkness kept interrupting that journey.
When night came, books closed too early. Revision became difficult. Assignments remained unfinished. The boys often sat quietly inside rooms filled more with ambition than light.
And in those moments, it felt as though darkness was stealing hours directly from their future.
Because for students fighting to succeed, every study hour matters.
Then Solar M7 changed everything.
Today, evenings inside the hostel feel completely different.
After sunset, the rooms glow with clean, reliable light. Books remain open late into the night. Students gather together revising lessons, discussing ideas, and preparing for examinations with renewed determination.
The silence that once came with darkness has been replaced by focus, laughter, and hope.
“Before Solar M7, studying at night was very difficult for the boys,” shared one community member during the interviews. “Now they continue learning comfortably after sunset, and you can see the difference in their motivation.”
According to Doreen Nanfuka, student hostels are among the places where reliable lighting creates immediate and deeply emotional educational impact.
“When you enter these hostels now, you feel energy and purpose,” Doreen explained. “The students are no longer forced to stop learning because darkness has arrived. Light has given them more time to fight for their dreams.”
Innocent Kawooya says educational environments remain central to the mission of #100DaysofSolar.
“Every additional hour of study creates possibility,” he noted. “Reliable energy helps young people compete more fairly, dream more confidently, and prepare for futures that once felt unreachable.”
Today, nights inside the boys’ hostel no longer signal the end of ambition.
Books stay open. Dreams stay awake. And in a place where darkness once stole precious study hours, light is now helping shape the next generation of leaders, innovators, and professionals Africa needs.
