A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Kasenge Nakawuka, Uganda
For Ssebunya Henry, leadership has never ended when the sun goes down.
At 51 years old, the assistant chairman of his community in Kasenge Nakawuka carries the responsibility of helping protect families, respond to insecurity, and support people during difficult moments. Many residents look to him for guidance and reassurance whenever problems arise.
But before Solar M7 arrived, darkness weakened even the strongest leaders.
At night, thieves moved confidently through the village, hidden by shadows that made homes vulnerable and communities fearful. Henry watched families struggle with insecurity while even his own household of seven lived anxiously after sunset.
For a man expected to stand as a protector, the darkness felt deeply frustrating.
Because leadership becomes difficult when fear controls the night.
The community needed safety. But darkness kept empowering the wrong people. Then Solar M7 arrived. And slowly, confidence returned.
Today, Henry’s home shines brightly after sunset. He now sees clearly around his household, responds more confidently to nighttime concerns, and helps protect his family and community with greater assurance.
The atmosphere around the home feels calmer. Safer. More secure. For Henry, the transformation feels like authority restored.
“Before Solar M7, darkness made security very difficult for our family and community,” Henry shared during his interview. “Now I feel stronger protecting my home and serving the people around me.”
According to Doreen Nanfuka, local leaders often experience enormous emotional pressure when communities remain unsafe and vulnerable after dark.
“When leaders feel unable to properly protect families because of darkness, it affects both confidence and community trust,” Doreen explained. “Reliable light strengthens safety, communication, and leadership at the local level.”
Innocent Kawooya says stories like Henry’s show how energy access contributes directly to stronger communities and local governance.
“Reliable light helps leaders respond more effectively and creates safer environments for families,” he noted. “Secure households help build secure communities.”
Today, nights inside Henry’s home no longer feel controlled by fear.
The thieves no longer own the darkness.
His family rests more peacefully.
And in a community where darkness once weakened leadership and security, Solar M7 is now helping restore something deeply important.
Protection. Confidence. And the strength to stand as a true guardian for others.
