Innocent Kawooya: Learn to Say No, Live Below Your Means and Build Wealth

HiPipo CEO Innocent Kawooya has called on individuals seeking to build wealth to control impulse spending, learn to say no, avoid lifestyle competition, live below their means and create a wider gap between their income and expenses.

Innocent shared the message on Wednesday, September 9, during the latest edition of his weekly financial literacy series, “1,000 Ways to Build Wealth.” The session was streamed live on HiPipo’s official TikTok account as well as HiPipo TV and Gagamel TV YouTube channels.

For the second consecutive week, Innocent was joined by Musonga Eclipse, Mr. President and former Makerere University Guild President Aspirant, for the discussion.

The latest session covered Ways 26 to 30, focusing largely on financial discipline, responsible spending and building the capacity to save and invest.

Control Impulse Spending

Way 26 in the 1,000 Ways to Build Wealth is Control Impulse Spending.

Innocent encouraged people to create a deliberate pause between wanting something and purchasing it, allowing them to make financial decisions based on reason rather than emotions.

He cautioned against impulsive spending and lifestyles that create the appearance of financial success before the underlying financial goals have been achieved.

The lesson, he noted, is not only about money leaving one’s pocket but also about resisting the temptation to prematurely live a lifestyle that one has not yet built the financial capacity to sustain.

Learn to Say No

For Way 27, Innocent encouraged people to Learn to Say No.

He described “no” as an important financial and personal boundary, arguing that people need to become comfortable rejecting habits, activities and commitments that do not contribute positively to their goals.

He encouraged individuals to say no to bad habits, unnecessary meetings, avoidable expenses and decisions that could push them into debt.

According to Innocent, the ability to say no starts with personal discipline and can protect an individual’s money, peace, freedom and time.

He also cautioned against saying no without good reason, particularly in organisational settings, stressing that the decision should always be contextual and guided by what creates value.

Avoid Lifestyle Competition

Way 28 is Avoid Lifestyle Competition.

Innocent challenged people to stop comparing their lifestyles and financial achievements with those of others.

He encouraged individuals to compete in their own lane, recognising that people have different incomes, responsibilities, goals and financial circumstances.

Lifestyle competition, he suggested, can encourage unnecessary spending as people attempt to match the consumption patterns of others.

Live Below Your Means While You Build

For Way 29, Innocent encouraged people to Live Below Their Means While They Build.

Keeping expenses below income, he explained, creates room for important financial priorities such as saving, investing, emergencies and business opportunities.

The approach requires people to resist the pressure to immediately increase their lifestyle whenever their income increases.

Instead, maintaining manageable expenses can create financial space that can be directed towards building assets and future opportunities.

Increase the Gap Between Income and Expenses

The 30th Way is Increase the Gap Between Income and Expenses.

Innocent argued that sustainable wealth creation requires individuals to increase their capacity to earn while keeping lifestyle costs under control.

He used the example of someone earning US$100 and spending US$90, leaving only US$10 for saving or investment.

Rather than accepting that narrow margin, he encouraged people to find ways to increase their income and manage their expenses so that a larger proportion of their earnings can be put towards productive purposes.

The objective, he explained, is not simply to earn more, but to ensure that the difference between income and expenses becomes productive through saving, investment, business opportunities and other wealth-building activities.

Financial Discipline at the Centre of Wealth Creation

The five Ways discussed in the latest session place financial discipline at the centre of wealth creation.

From resisting emotional purchases and learning to say no to avoiding lifestyle competition and maintaining expenses below income, the lessons encourage people to become more intentional about how they use their money.

The series also highlights the importance of creating financial margins that can be converted into savings, investments and productive opportunities.

The “1,000 Ways to Build Wealth” financial literacy sessions continue every Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. EAT on HiPipo’s official TikTok account, in partnership with HiPipo University, with the sessions also streamed on HiPipo TV and Gagamel TV YouTube channels.
