After 15 Years of Failed Negotiations, Fury vs. Joshua Finally Set for December 11 in Cardiff

The fight that defined a generation of British boxing but never happened is finally happening.

Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua will meet in the ring on December 11 at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, promoter Turki Alalshikh confirmed Thursday, ending a saga of collapsed negotiations, competing contracts, and near-misses that stretched back more than a decade.

“For 15 years no one has been able to make this fight,” Alalshikh posted on X. “I can now confirm that Fury Vs Joshua will be coming to the UK, as I promised British boxing fans. The time for talking is over.

Fury and Joshua once held every heavyweight belt between them. In 2021, they signed a two-fight deal to unify the division. It collapsed when an arbitration ruling forced Fury into a third fight with Deontay Wilder instead.

Both men later lost their titles to Oleksandr Usyk, who became undisputed champion before vacating his belts earlier this year. What was once a fight for all the marbles is now, for many observers, a fight for legacy and bragging rights.

“Both fighters… are way past their best,” former cruiserweight world champion Johnny Nelson told Sky Sports. “But I also believe that because they’re fighting each other, if there’s ever a time that they’re going to be able to turn back time for one night only, it’s December 11”.

The final hurdle was never money — it was geography.

Netflix, which holds global broadcast rights, wanted a prime-time slot for American audiences. Joshua’s contract, however, contained a clause requiring the fight to be staged in the UK, and his promoter Eddie Hearn refused to renegotiate it.

Cardiff emerged as the solution. The Principality Stadium’s retractable roof protects against Welsh winter weather, and unlike Wembley the venue can accommodate a start time of approximately 1 a.m. local time, aligning with 8 p.m. on the U.S. East Coast.

“Everybody’s got to make a compromise,” Fury’s promoter Frank Warren told the BBC. “Tyson really compromised. He said, ‘Fine, wherever they want it, I’ll do it'”.

The fight will be the second for Joshua since he survived a December 2025 car crash in Nigeria that killed two of his closest friends. In his July return against Kristian Prenga, Joshua was knocked down twice in the opening round before recovering to win in the second.

Fury, 38, has fought twice since his 2024 losses to Usyk, recording comfortable victories over Arslanbek Makhmudov and Mariusz Wach.

Nelson warned that Joshua’s recent performance is a cause for concern. “If you’re going on his last fight, he’s in a world of trouble,” he said.

While neither fighter currently holds a world title, Ring Magazine has reported that the WBA “super” heavyweight championship — vacated by Usyk — will be on the line for the winner .

The two men will appear together for the first time at a press conference in London on September 30, with the fight streamed globally on Netflix at no extra cost to subscribers.

For British boxing fans who spent a decade waiting, the answer to the question of who sits higher in the heavyweight pantheon is finally coming. It will just arrive at 1 a.m. on a Friday night in Cardiff.
