MTN MoMo Launches Mobile Toll Payments on Kampala–Entebbe Expressway

Motorists using the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway can now pay their toll fees using Mobile Money, following the launch of a new cashless payment service at all three toll plazas along the route.

The service, unveiled at a ceremony in Kajjansi on Friday, is available at Busega, Mpala, and Kajjansi toll plazas, marking a significant step towards a fully automated toll collection system on one of Uganda’s most critical transport corridors.

Under the new arrangement, motorists using designated Lanes 4 and 5 at each toll plaza can complete their payment in seconds. The process is straightforward: upon arrival at a designated lane, the motorist provides their mobile number to the toll attendant, receives a payment prompt on their phone, enters their Mobile Money PIN to authorise the transaction, and once payment is confirmed, the gate opens.

MTN Uganda’s Chief Product Officer, Jemima Kariuki, said the technology is designed to facilitate near-instant payment confirmation, allowing transactions to be completed within seconds.

“The true value of technology lies not in the technology itself, but in how it makes everyday life better, faster and more convenient,” Kariuki said. “Today, we’re extending the convenience of MoMo from payments and transfers to how Ugandans move.”

She added: “As MTN MoMo, we remain committed to working with government, businesses and other partners to connect digital payments to more aspects of everyday life and help make Uganda’s digital transformation practical, inclusive and meaningful for citizens.”

Ivan Katamba, General Manager of Pinnacle Security, welcomed the partnership between the Ministry of Works and Transport, the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway (KEE), and MTN MoMo, highlighting that the new payment solution addresses a long-standing need from road users for more convenient and accessible ways to pay toll fees.

Eng. Joan Alinda, Project Manager at KEE, emphasised the Ministry’s commitment to delivering world-class services on the expressway. She highlighted ongoing investments in road safety, emergency response services, and customer convenience, noting that the introduction of MoMo payments marks another step towards a fully automated toll collection system.

Eng. Dr. Timothy Tibesigwa, Acting Engineer-in-Chief at the Ministry of Works and Transport, described the launch as an important milestone in efforts to modernise toll collection and improve the experience of road users.

“The Kampala-Entebbe Expressway remains a vital part of Uganda’s transport network, connecting Kampala, Entebbe International Airport and surrounding areas while significantly reducing travel time and improving the movement of people and businesses,” Tibesigwa said.

He noted that for anyone who has ever arrived at a toll plaza only to realise they don’t have cash on hand, the new payment option provides a convenient solution. “You can now pay your toll quickly and conveniently using Mobile Money,” he said.

The launch of Mobile Toll Pay is part of broader efforts to integrate digital payments into everyday life across Uganda, supporting the country’s digital transformation agenda. By extending the convenience of mobile money to toll payments, the initiative aims to reduce congestion at toll plazas, improve the overall travel experience, and promote the adoption of cashless payments.

The service will initially be available at the three toll plazas, with plans to expand and enhance the system as part of ongoing investments in the expressway’s infrastructure.
