A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Bukalango, Wakiso District, Uganda
Meet Bugembe David.
He is only 18 years old.
But inside his home in Bukalango, Wakiso District, he already carries responsibilities far beyond his age.
With his mother hospitalised, David has become the head of the family, caring for six younger siblings while trying to protect their future from collapsing under the weight of hardship.
Every day demands strength from him.
He worries about food. About school. About survival.
And before Solar M7 arrived, darkness made everything even harder.
When night came, studying became almost impossible. The children struggled to revise lessons properly, and David feared they were slowly falling behind simply because their home lacked reliable light.
Yet education mattered deeply to him.
Because for families like his, learning represents more than school.
It represents survival. Hope. And the possibility of escaping the cycle of suffering surrounding them.
Then Solar M7 arrived.
And suddenly, the evenings inside David’s home began to change.
Tonight, the house glows with light.
A single phone charges safely from home, giving the family access to learning materials, communication, and online revision support. The children now study after sunset instead of surrendering to darkness.
And for the first time in a long while, David feels less alone in carrying the burden of protecting his siblings’ future.
“Before Solar M7, nights were very difficult for us,” David shared during his interview. “Studying was hard, and we worried about many things. But now the children can revise at night, and I feel stronger knowing their future still has hope.”
According to Doreen Nanfuka, young people carrying family responsibilities often face invisible emotional pressure that becomes even heavier under conditions of energy poverty.
“When you meet someone like David, you immediately see resilience,” Doreen explained. “But you also see how something as simple as reliable light can relieve stress, support education, and help families keep moving forward during very difficult moments.”
Innocent Kawooya says stories like David’s remind communities why energy access must be connected to youth empowerment and educational opportunity.
“Many young people across Africa are carrying enormous responsibilities while still trying to build their own future,” he noted. “Reliable light gives them a better chance to continue learning, supporting their families, and believing in tomorrow.”
Today, nights inside David’s home no longer feel defeated.
Books remain open. Lessons continue.
And in a house where darkness once threatened to overwhelm a young family, Solar M7 is helping an 18-year-old keep hope alive for the people depending on him most.
His siblings. Their dreams. And the future they still deserve.
