#IncludeEveryone: Here are the nominees for #DIAA2019 Best Digital Embrace by Non-Consumer Facing Brands.

It’s impossible to argue against digital media’s impact as an efficient and effective method for connecting brands and consumers. Efforts undertaken by consumer facing brands such as telecoms, online stores, fast foods, beauty products, hospitals and banks among others are great examples of how a brand can benefit when it opens its doors and welcomes consumer interaction. Digital Customer Experience is real and most consumer facing brands now mind a great deal about it.

But what about the non-consumer facing brands which from their works are seen as some regulators, serve specific niches and mostly don’t interface with final consumers on a daily.

“Non-consumer facing companies realize there are clear benefits to implementing a social media strategy, but what do they need to do to achieve success? The truth is, the social media strategy, processes, and principles, don’t really change much depending on your company type and size.” Mark Wallace, a renowned digital expert once said.

The nominees for the #DIAA2019 Best Digital Embrace by Non-Consumer Facing Brand are CAA Uganda, FUFA, IRA Uganda, UEGCL and UNRA.

For the fact, air transport is largely digital driven. As such, The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA aka CCA-Uganda); the regulatory body of Air Transport in Uganda is by all means expected to be a digital first establishment. Even though, its website is up to date with latest air transport content, its outlook/design needs some makeover. UCCA is also active across Social Media mainly Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.

Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) has over the years incorporated digital/tech in its activities. FUFA’s embrace for digital media is equally commendable. Well as its website is updated with the latest multi-media content relating to the game of football in Uganda, an outlook/design revamp would offer much better digital customer experience to the site visitors. FUFA is very active on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

As a regulator for the insurance industry, the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA-Uganda) continues to improve its digital customer experience with good effort put on website content updates, and Facebook. However, more needs to be done including a website revamp and more use of Twitter.

The Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) is implementing a strong digital strategy. Its website is user friendly, strong on visuals, illustrative of its mandate and always updated. UEGCL is also very strong on Social Media mainly YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

Because seeing is believing, visuals always sell more in the digital world. The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has a visually strong, multimedia and updated website- telling the story of what this agency does. UNRA is also active on Social Media particularly WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter.

The overall winner for the #DIAA2019 Best Digital Embrace by Non-Consumer Facing Brand will be determined by a Jury/Research Panel assessment and public survey/vote.

#IncludeEveryone: A look at the nominees for #DIAA2019 Commendation for Trade Digitization.

Like the case of 2018 edition, the 2019 Digital Impact Awards Africa (#DIAA2019) has the Commendation for Trade Digitization category.

The difference though is that while in 2018, this category had no nominees and the winner selected by the Awards Jury; this year, the category has nominees and the winner will come from a combined public vote/jury assessment.

The Commendation for Trade Digitization seeks to recognize and appreciate an individual, government or non-government agency that is spearheading the digitalization of trade through introducing, funding, facilitating and supporting the use of technology to improve trade in Uganda.

The three nominees for Commendation for Trade Digitization are the Uganda Electronic Single Window, the Uganda Trade Information Portal and the extension of the Regional Electronic Cargo Tracking system (RECTs) from Uganda to Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

RECTs extension to DR Congo.

On 9th July, 2019; the DRC Directorate of Customs and Excise (DGDA) and the Ugandan Revenues Authority (URA) signed the Regional Electronic Cargo Tracking system (RECTs) standards operating procedures, marking the launch of the RECTs control centre extension to DRC cargo. RECTs is now operational in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and now DRC with Congo’s control station hosted in Kampala.

The introduction of an electronic cargo tracking system to the Northern Corridor from Mombasa to DR Congo is expected to reduce transit costs by reducing lengthy transit times caused by physical checks in transit countries and across the DRC territory. The system will also reduce the risk of freight diversion between the place of origin and checkpoints. As a result, it will effectively combat fraud and increase tax revenues. The RECTS will also benefit the eastern Africa region as a whole in which goods to or from DRC will transit including; Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Kenya.

This RECTs extension project is facilitated by TradeMark East Africa (TMEA) through a USD 642,000 fund from the Department of International Development (DFID).

Uganda Trade Information Portal.

Launched in November 2018, the Uganda Trade Information Portal (www.ugandatrades.go.ug) is a trade facilitation digital platform providing access to fully transparent practical step-by-step guides to the licenses, pre-clearance permits and clearance formalities for the most traded goods (exports, imports and goods in transit) in and out of Uganda. At each step, the trade portal tells the user where to go, who to see, what documents to bring, what forms to fill, what costs to pay, what law justifies the step and where to complain to in case of a problem.

The Trade Information Portal is implemented by the Ministry of Trade Industry and Cooperatives (MTIC) and the National Trade Facilitation Committee, in partnership with the East African Community Secretariat (EAC) and with support from United States Agency for International Development (USAID), TradeMark East Africa (TMEA), United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and International Trade Centre (ITC).

A user checks out the Uganda Trade Information Portal through a tablet.

Uganda Electronic Single Window.

The Uganda Electronic Single Window (www.singlewindow.go.ug) is a trade platform that lets Traders, Clearing and Forwarding firms submit and process import, export and transit related trade documents electronically while enabling real-time exchange and sharing of information and documentation between various customs and cross border agencies.

With the Uganda Electronic Single Window, traders are now able to clear and forward goods in record time, handle less paperwork, reduce their transaction costs and e-track shipments across borders via any internet enabled device.

As of May 2019, the Uganda Electronic Single Window had already connected and interlinked 16 trade facilitation agencies. These include Uganda National Drug Authority, Uganda National Bureau of Standards, and Uganda Coffee Development Authority. More are to be added.

The Uganda Electronic Single Window is implemented by Ministry Of Trade, Industry and Co-operatives and Uganda Revenue Authority. It is funded by Danida through TradeMark East Africa.

The overall winner for the #DIAA2019 Commendation for Trade Digitization will be determined by a Jury/Research Panel assessment and public survey/vote.

#IncludeEveryone: The #DIAA2019 Award for the Best Digital Powered Campaign goes to?

Digital Media is fast growing as a strong media for marketing and public relations.  A cost analysis for media (Radio, TV, Print and Digital) shows that Digital media has the lowest cost per a thousand, more measurable with good return on investment and allows feedback – real time or delayed. Digital Media when well used combines all other media as it allows text, voice, still images and videos.

Nonetheless, Radio is still the most popular, while Print and TV give higher and believable PR value. Or do they?

The #DIAA2019 Award for the Best Digital Powered Campaign seeks to reward a marketing campaign that was either totally digital or relayed heavily on digital tools in its execution. Some of the things being looked out for are what digital tools were used, how frequent were these tools used, and what traditional-new media synergies were introduced along the way.

UG Mix Maestro is a platform introduced by Uganda Waragi to celebrate unique talent that deejays have to offer. It is hosted on different dates and different locations across the country. In the last one year, the UG Mix Maestro has had a strong adoption of digital media as part of its promotion.

#IncludeEveryone: Which of these #DIAA2019 Disruptive Innovation Nominees thrilled you?

“Every once in a while; a new technology, an old problem and a big idea turn into an innovation,” Dean Kamen once said.

In the last one year, several innovations were introduced on the Ugandan market. In the digital and financial inclusion space, a lot of improved solutions came on board with a solo intention of improving the lives of users.

The #DIAA2019 Disruptive Innovation Category seeks to reward a digital or financial inclusion advancement that was introduced and has since led to a business unusual feeling in the sub-sector it serves. Yes, they are disruptive but for positive reasons.

Because many of these innovations are new, they may require time and big budgets before they fully sink in to the market. But in principle, they are good but also pro-development.

Further, following Everett Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation theory, these Innovations must definitely follow an acceptance path from Innovators to Early Adopters, Early Majority and Late Majority. There are also Laggards whose rigidity and conservative behaviour means that they may not use these life changing products and services.

The nominees for #DIAA2019 Disruptive Innovation are Citimasta App: Traffic Update and Route Planner, MTN MoMoCard: Virtual Card to Shop or Make Payments, SafeBoda Pairing: Get the Nearest Rider, Standard Chartered Bank: Straight2bank Liquidity Management, YO TV: Online Television Without Commitments and StarTimes ON: Online Video Anytime, Anywhere with Any Device.

Traffic Jam is one of the most nagging things on Kampala roads. The other is dust and pot holes mainly on the outskirts of the city. Citi Masta APP is the solution to Traffic Jam as it enables drivers to know which route is moving and which one is not moving around Kampala. This in turn helps them to make informed decisions on why to pass or not. The Citi Masta APP can be downloaded from Google Play and APP stores.

The MTN MoMocard is a virtual card available to MTN customers that enables them to perform online transactions with funds from their MTN MoMo wallet. It is implemented in parternship with Mastercard. This MTN Momocard has a maximum value of UGX 3 million valid for 30 days. MTN Uganda Mobile Money customers simply dial *165*70# to get started.

SafeBoda has with no doubt revolutionized Uganda’s Boda Boda business. With more than 12,000 riders, the company’s better days are ahead.  One year ago, SafeBoda added an interesting feature on its APP named Pairing. The pairing feature allows passengers to spot a Safeboda rider, stop him/her, enter the rider’s helmet number into the app, match with them instantly and then embark on a professional ride up to the customer’s destination. The Pairing feature is not only time saving but also allows the passenger to choose a preferred rider. Truth is that SafeBoda passengers love this feature.

Standard Chartered’s Straight2Bank is a fully-integrated internet banking platform that caters for transacting and reporting needs across cash management, foreign exchange and trade finance for a customer, all at a click. It is giving Standard Chartered customers a variety of benefits.

YOTVChannels is an innovative app that allows you to access the best of Ugandan live television, radio, music and other multi-media content on your phone, tablet or computer anywhere, anytime. It is a one stop center for over 50 TV and Radio channels – local and international currently with more others continuously added on.

Described as Africa’s number 1 online video service platform, StarTimes ON is dedicated to providing fresh entertainment and convenient online video service anytime, anywhere and on almost every device. It is used by more than 14 million users, has over 160 live channels, more than 20,000 hours of Video on-demand content and covering at-least 45 countries. Its flagship content includes News, Documentary, Entertainment, Movies, Music and Sports in languages such as English, French, Swahili and Portuguese. Most of its local content comes from Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and Mozambique. After downloading the StarTimes ON APP, its subscription mode is pay perhour/day/week/month. You don’t need to be a StarTimes Digital TV subscriber to subscribe for the StarTimes ON APP.

The overall winner for the #DIAA2019 Disruptive Innovation will be determined by a Jury/Research Panel assessment and public survey/vote.
