The Light That Stood Between Loss and Life

A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Buteyongera, Mukono District, Uganda

Inside a small mud house in Buteyongera, Mukono District, Nambozo Sumin carries the weight of raising seven children almost entirely on her own.

Some days are harder than words can explain.

Her husband comes and goes, often returning only long enough to leave behind another responsibility, another mouth to feed, another burden for her already exhausted hands and heart.

Yet every morning, Nambozo still wakes up determined to fight for her children.

Before Solar M7 arrived, darkness made that fight even harder.

When night fell, the house became dangerous. Cooking, feeding children, and moving around safely inside the home became difficult. Fear settled into the evenings. In homes like hers, where poverty and darkness live side by side, too many children fall sick, and too many babies are lost to preventable conditions made worse by unsafe living environments.

For mothers like Nambozo, night was never simply night.

It was survival. Then Solar M7 came into her home. And suddenly, everything changed.

Tonight, she can prepare meals safely for her children.

Tonight, the children can sleep in a cleaner, safer environment.

Tonight, the fear that once filled the darkness has loosened its grip on her family.

And tonight, for the first time in a long time, her home carries something stronger than struggle.

Dignity.

“When the light came on, I felt relief inside my heart,” Nambozo shared during her interview. “Now I can care for my children properly at night. We feel safer. The children are happier. Even the home feels different.”

According to Doreen Nanfuka, many of the women reached during #100DaysofSolar are carrying invisible burdens that become even heavier in darkness.

“When you listen to mothers like Nambozo, you understand that energy access is deeply connected to health, safety, motherhood, and survival,” Doreen explained. “The light gives families more than visibility. It gives them protection, confidence, and peace of mind.”

Innocent Kawooya says stories like Nambozo’s continue to show why energy access must be treated as a human dignity issue across Africa.

“This is not just about technology,” he noted. “This is about protecting families, supporting mothers, improving health, and helping communities live with greater dignity and hope.”

Today, the nights inside Nambozo’s small mud house no longer feel helpless.

A mother feeds her children safely. Seven children sleep under light instead of fear. And in a home where darkness once threatened life itself, hope now shines every single night.
