MTN Foundation hands over 10 houses worth UShs. 135 million

MTN Foundation has handed over 10 houses to families in Kiryandongo who were displaced by the 2010 Bududa landslides. This is as a result of a pledge that was made by MTN Uganda to contribute towards the construction of houses in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organisation that focuses on building low cost houses for the under privileged. The 10 low cost houses constructed at a cost of UShs.135 million.

“At MTN Uganda, we realize and understand the importance of continued support towards the communities where we operate. The landslide that displaced the people of Bududa shocked the whole country and the world and deeply touched us at MTN and that’s why we decided to come in and help,” said Mazen Mrouè, CEO MTN Uganda.

On the evening of March 1st, 2010, three entire villages were erased and over 400 people buried alive in one of the worst Bududa landslides. Most of the over 8,000 affected victims, with no homes, destroyed gardens, animals and livelihood were relocated to temporary camps in Bududa.

To date, 4000 people have been unaccounted for. Eighty nine households (406 individuals) have since been transferred by government to Kiryandongo District where they were allocated 2.5 acres of land. Since then, government has relocated the displaced families to various camps. The government is also initially providing agricultural in-puts, equipment and food items for six months as they prepare to plant their own food.

Mroué thanked the government for its efforts in resettling the affected families. He reiterated that the selection criteria for the beneficiaries of the houses, was set by MTN’s partners, Habitat for Humanity. It was based on consideration of the most vulnerable groups in the camps which included the women and children particularly families with babies and young children that need to be together to be able to cope with issues of hygiene, food and safety.

“Governments all over the world are over whelmed by emergencies like these, and most times, especially in the developing world it is important for partners to answer the call and provide support for the relief efforts. As Uganda’s number one corporate citizen, we believe it’s our obligation to support government efforts in areas like these,” Mroué said.

The partnership between MTN and Habitat for Humanity spans over 10 years. The first houses built through this partnership date back to 1999, with the first homes being in Mbale and Hoima districts. Since then, MTN Uganda has built a total of 237 homes in partnership with Habitat for Humanity housing close to 1380 individuals; this is the largest number of homes funded by a corporate company.

——–

Kampala, Uganda – 08th May 2013

To enable MTN Uganda improve service delivery to their customers, in line with the current market and economic dynamics in Uganda, MTN Uganda has made slight increments in their Mobile Money tariffs effective Wednesday 8th May 2013.

MTN Uganda serves over 4 million Mobile Money users in the land. Since the launch of Mobile Money in early 2009, the service has significantly impacted how Ugandans transact in the New World, through paying for goods and services as well as sending and receiving money from and to anywhere in the country as well as Internationally, thanks to partnerships like one with Western Union.

With Mobile Money, users are able to pay for electricity bills, water, school fees and also make deposits direct to their bank accounts among other functions.

Our New tariffs are guided by our understanding that we need to constantly improve and sustain the robustness and availability of our MTN Mobile Money services across the country.” said Ernst Fonternel, MTN Uganda Chief Marketing Officer.

Read full press release below for details.

MTN Uganda adjusts Mobile Money Tariffs

MTN Uganda has adjusted its Mobile Money tariffs slightly for the first time since the largely successful product was first launched four years ago.

MTN Uganda launched their Mobile Money service in early 2009 and has in the last four years made significant changes to how Ugandans are transacting in the New World, through paying for goods and services as well as sending and receiving money from and to anywhere in the country as well as Internationally.

“MTN strives to constantly improve our service delivery to our customers. Our New tariffs are guided by our understanding that we need to constantly improve and sustain the robustness and availability of our MTN Mobile Money services across the country.” said Ernst Fonternel, MTN Uganda Chief Marketing Officer.

Fonternel explained that the increase in tariffs is meant to enable the telecom company to improve service delivery to their customers, in line with the current market and economic dynamics in Uganda.

“While the cumulative inflation since early 2009 to date is well in excess of 50%, MTN has never adjusted its tariffs to cater for inflationary and/or other economic pressures. We are adjusting our tariffs slightly, relative to the benefits associated with Mobile Money to ensure we have a sustainable business model for the future.” Fonternel said.

The new rates which took effect 8th May 2013 will affect sending money to both registered and non-registered Mobile Money users, withdrawing Money from an MTN Mobile Money agent, paying bills using the MTN Mobile Money Pay Bill service, paying bills using the MTN Mobile Money Goods & Services menu and Sending Bulk Mobile Money payments.

“The increase in tariffs will facilitate an increase in our Agent Network commissions to ensure that our agents get better rewards on high value transactions and as an incentive to hold adequate float to ensure that customers have the best distribution network available. The change in tariffs ensures that we can continue to invest into our platform bringing new innovative and relevant services to Uganda while expanding our extensive distribution network.” Fonternel added.

Fonternel explained that despite the changes, some tariffs will not be affected. “You can still buy airtime and buy Mobile Money (Deposit) free of charge. Also Registering for Mobile Money, checking your account balance and changing your PIN number are still free of charge.”

Transaction limits have stayed the same, with minimum account balance at 0/- and the minimum transaction limit at 500/-. The maximum account balance remains 5,000,000/- and the maximum daily transaction limit remains 4,000,000/-.

Since the product was first launched four years ago, MTN Mobile Money has grown significantly with monthly transactions now in excess of 27 million with a Mobile Money Base of more than 4 million customers.

It has also grown from a basic service enabling sending and receiving money, and buying airtime, to a convenient service that enables a lot more, such as paying school fees, trade and commerce, bill payments, and a host of other payments. Today, you can literally do anything with mobile money from the comfort of your office or home.

At a recent GSM Mobile Money adoption survey, MTN Mobile Money was declared the second fastest growing mobile money service in the world.

This year and going forward, MTN plans to increase the person to business and business to person services on the platform to enable more commerce to be done over the service.
The complete list of new tariffs is readily available at any MTN shop or service center as well as on www.mtn.co.ug/MobileMoneyRates.

For any further inquiries or assistance call the MTN Mobile Money helpline on 122, the General MTN Helpline on 123, or visit a nearby MTN Service Centre or MTN Mobile Money agent.

Guinness Football Challenge 3 Enters the Quarter Final Stage

0

——

………..as Ugandans falter at the Pan-African stage

The best contestants from the qualifying stage of the Guinness Football Challenge season 3 which pitted Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania were dramatically ushered into the quarter final level at the Pan-African Game where they face off with their West African counterparts – Cameroun and Ghana.

Ugandan contestants had in the preliminary stage been eliminated after facing stiff competition from their next door neighbours, Kenya and Tanzania, but as it is in the game of football, a wildcard team was included which saw Uganda’s pair of Ibrahim Kawooya and Alex Muyobo represent the country as the best runners up in the East African show.

But as fate would have it, they failed to live up to the challenge by first failing to win cash in the ‘Mystery Goalkeeper/Cash Ball’ Challenge and consequently being bundled out in the first round of their quarterfinal.

There will be four quarter final rounds where contestants stand to win a maximum of 48,000USD. With two teams proceeding to the semifinals which promise to be more exciting and challenging, it will be interesting to see how East Africa levels up with the hitherto giants of African football, Cameroun and Ghana.

Flavia Tumusiime, the Ugandan co-host of the preliminary rounds of the Challenge has also given the mantle to the very talented Mimi Kalinda from South Africa who joins Larry Asego in co-hosting the show that now includes French translations for the benefit of the francophone countries and contestants.

The show has become even more interesting and challenging with the inclusion of activities like ‘Giant Bins’ which are set to excite football lovers across Africa as contestants step up to the challenge of demonstrating that they are made of more!
