The Farmer Who Walks Freely Again After Years of Darkness

A #100DaysofSolar Human Impact Story from Kasenge Nakawuka, Uganda

For Mugisha Vincent, darkness once turned every movement inside his home into a struggle.

At 66 years old, the disabled farmer from Kasenge Nakawuka has lived with the lasting effects of a car accident that severely injured his leg. Since then, even simple tasks have required extra effort, caution, and resilience.

But before Solar M7 arrived, nights became especially dangerous.

Inside the darkness, Vincent often stumbled over unseen objects scattered around the house. Every step carried risk. Falls and injuries became common because he could not clearly see where he was walking.

And to survive the nights, he relied on small torches that drained his little money constantly.

Nearly every other day, he spent 1,000 Ugandan shillings replacing batteries or searching for temporary light, money that could have supported food, farming, or daily survival.

For Vincent, darkness did more than limit visibility.

It trapped him in dependence. Then Solar M7 arrived. And slowly, his freedom began returning.

Today, his home is brightly and safely lit after sunset. He now moves through the house with greater confidence and stability. The fear of falling has reduced dramatically. The money once disappearing into weak torches now remains inside the household where it can support more meaningful needs.

For Vincent, the transformation feels deeply personal.

“Before Solar M7, nights were difficult and dangerous for me,” Vincent shared during his interview. “I often injured myself in darkness, and the torches cost me too much money. But now I move safely and feel independent again.”

According to Doreen Nanfuka, people living with disabilities are among the groups most affected by lack of reliable lighting and unsafe living conditions.

“When homes remain dark, daily life becomes far more dangerous for people with mobility challenges,” Doreen explained. “Reliable light restores confidence, safety, and the ability to live more independently.”

Innocent Kawooya says stories like Vincent’s highlight how energy access directly supports dignity and inclusion for vulnerable people.

“Reliable light helps restore independence to people who have spent years limited by unsafe environments,” he noted. “Energy access is also about mobility, confidence, and human dignity.”

Today, nights inside Vincent’s home no longer feel dangerous.

The floor is visible. Movement feels safer. And in a house where darkness once stole both comfort and freedom, Solar M7 is now helping restore something powerful.

Independence. Confidence. And the dignity of moving through life without fear again.
